Matthew 5:17–19
Jesus said, “Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth pass away, not one letter, not one stroke of a letter, will pass from the law until all is accomplished. Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, will be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.”
REFLECTIONS:
I think because the law was seemingly inextricably linked to the idea of a military messiah like King David, and that was not Jesus’ concept of who he was, Christianity has tended to ignore this affirmation of his. He said that the law remains important in his understanding of the Kingdom of God. The fruition of the law is simply transformed. We cannot have the New Testament without the Old Testament. We cannot ignore the teachings of the prophets and say we follow only Jesus. We are a people of the whole Bible. Peace to you, Keith
